Acupuncture
What is acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture is the use of fine needles at specific points on the body’s surface to restore and maintain health. Acupuncture is part of a system of medicine that has been practiced in China for several thousand years which includes herbal medicine, dietary therapy and manipulation. Modern science has shown that acupuncture stimulates the brain to produce natural pain relieving chemicals called endorphins. These can assist the body in healing itself and give pain relief. The traditional view is that “Qi” flows around the body in channels. If the Qi is flowing freely then the body is in a healthy state. If there is a problem, energy stagnates. The stimulation of appropriate acupuncture points frees this stagnation.
Acupuncture is now practiced throughout the world to provide safe and effective relief for a variety of illnesses ranging from arthritis, asthma, and anxiety states through to headaches, migraine and menstrual disorders. It is also used in the treatment of sinus problems, skin rashes, stomach troubles and the vague states of exhaustion and poor health which often have no clear medical explanation. Acupuncture is above all a means for the body to heal itself.
